The Structural Model for the Health Related Factors of Preschoolers

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study aims to set up a model, which explains the factors influencing the health of preschoolers, and to verify the appropriateness of the model.
Methods: The hypothetic modeling was based on the Barnard’s model. Among the theoretical variables, exogenous variables consisted of child temperament, socioeconomic status and paternal support. Endogenous variables consisted of maternal depression, maternal child rearing, and child health. The subjects were 204 mothers who have preschool children within normal weight. The data were collected by using self-reported questionnaires in March of 2010, and analyzed with SPSS and AMOS.
Results: Hypothetic model was fit to fitness indices (χ²=34.61, p=.04; GFI=0.97, SRMR=0.04, AGFI=0.92, NFI=0.93, CFI=0.97, Q(χ²/df) =1.57, RMSEA=0.05). Among 12 paths of hypothetical model, 8 paths were supported and 10 effects proved significant from statistical perspectives. Child health was directly and indirectly impacted by child temperament, paternal support, maternal depression, and maternal child rearing. These variables accounted for 38.2% of the preschooler’s child health.
Conclusions: Paternal child rearing involvement and marital intimacy as well as maternal depression, maternal child rearing attitude and caring behaviors were identified as critical variables influencing child health. These results suggest that some strategies are needed for promoting maternal child rearing attitude and caring behaviors and paternal support in order to promote child health.
